The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:33 p.m., this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Co-Chairs, The Hon. Shirley Maheu and Mauril Bélanger, presiding.
Members of the Committee present:
From the Senate: The Honourables Gérald A. Beaudoin, Jean-Robert Gauthier, Viola Léger, Shirley Maheu and Raymond C. Setlakwe.
From the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet, Sarmite Bulte, Yvon Godin, John Herron, Bernard Patry, Scott Reid and Benoît Sauvageau.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe and Marion Ménard, analysts.
Appearing: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: The Hon. Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage.
WitnessesFrom the Department of Canadian Heritage: Eileen Sarkar, Assistant Deputy Minister, Citizenship and Heritage; Hilaire Lemoine, Director General, Official Languages Support Programs.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(4)b), the Committee undertakes a review of and report on official languages policies and programs.
The minister made a statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.
