Meeting No. 32

Tuesday, April 16, 2002

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Co-Chair, Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Hon. Gérald A. Beaudoin, The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier, The Hon. Viola Léger, The Hon. Joan Fraser and The Hon. Raymond C. Setlakwe.

From the House of Commons: Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet, Sarmite Bulte, Yvon Godin, Benoît Sauvageau and Yolande Thibeault.

In attendance: From the Senate : Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the House of Commons: Jean-François Pagé, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe and Marion Ménard, Analysts.

Appearing: The Hon. Lucienne Robillard, President of the Treasury Board.

Witnesses: From the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat: Carole Swan, Associate Secretary of the Treasury Board; Diana Monnet, Assistant Secretary, Official Languages; Ralph Heintzman, Assistant Secretary, Strategic Policy and Planning.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(4)b), a review of Official languages policies and programs of the Treasury Board.

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera. The Committee proceeded to consider a draft report on the consultation with official language minority communities.

It was agreed, -- That the report entitled “The official language minority told us …” be adopted in its modified form as the Eighth report of the Standing Joint Committee and that the Co-Chairs table the report in the Senate and in the House of Commons.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee print 550 copies of its Eighth report in tumble bilingual format.

It was agreed, -- That the analysts and the Co-Clerks be authorized to make editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the Report.

At 5:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
