The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:32 p.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Co-Chair, Mauril Bélanger, presiding.
Members of the Committee present:
From the Senate : The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier and The Hon. Michel Biron.
From the House of Commons : Mauril Bélanger, Gérard Binet, Sarmite Bulte, Yvon Godin and John Herron.
Acting Members present: Michel Bellehumeur for Benoît Sauvageau, Diane St-Jacques for Yolande Thibeault, Dominic LeBlanc for Eugène Bellemare.
In attendance: From the Senate : Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the House of Commons: Jean-François Pagé, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.
Appearing: From the House of Commons: Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
Witness: From the Department of Justice: Mario Dion, Associate Deputy Minister.
In accordance with Standing Order 108(4)b), the Committee resumed its study on Part VII of the Official Languages Act.
The Minister made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.
At 5:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
