Meeting No. 21

Monday, October 29, 2001

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Co-Chairs, The Hon. Shirley Maheu and Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier ,The Hon. Viola Léger and The Hon. Rose-Marie Losier-Cool.

From the House of Commons: Yvon Godin, John Herron, Benoît Sauvageau and Yolande Thibeault.

In attendance: From the Senate: Tonu Onu, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the House of Commons: Jean-François Pagé, Co-Clerk of the Committee. From the Library of Parliament: Robert Asselin, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Air Canada Pilots Association: Serge Beaulieu, President, Montreal Regional Council. From the Canadian Union of Public Employees: Edmond Udvarhelyi, Union Representative, CUPE Section 4001 - Air Canada. From the CAW - Canada (International Automobile, Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers Union of Canada): Gary Fane, Director of Transportation. From the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Dyane Adam, Commissioner of Official Languages.

In accordance with Standing Order 108 (4b), a study on the bilingual services offered by Air Canada.

Mr. Beaulieu, Udvarhelyi and Fane made opening statements then answered questions.

Mrs. Adam made an opening statement.

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
