The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Benoît Serré, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

From the Senate: The Hon. Jean-Robert Gauthier, The Hon. Rose-Marie Losier-Cool, The Hon. Louis J. Robichaud, The Honourable Joan Fraser.

From the House of Commons: Louis Plamondon, Benoît Serré.

In attendance: From the Senate: Luc Bégin, Joint-Clerk of the Committee. From the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Western Economic Diversification Canada: The Honourable Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State, (Western Economic Diversification) (Francophonie).

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108 (4)(b), the Committee resumed its study on the application of Part VII of the Official Languages Act.

Mr. Ron J. Duhamel, André Gladu, Paul J. LeBlanc, Brigitte Hohn and Louise Paquette, each made an opening statement, and with David Dallimore, answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
