Tuesday, February 17, 1998

The Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages met at 3:35 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 362-E , East Block , the Co-Chair, Rose-Marie Losier-Cool, presiding.

Members of the Committee present:

Representing the Senate: Gérald A. Beaudoin, Lucie Pépin, Jean-Claude Rivest, Fernand Robichaud, Gérald Comeau.

Representing the House of Commons: Denis Coderre, Yvon Godin, Dan McTeague, Val Meredith, Louis Plamondon.

In attendance: Tonu Onu, Joint Clerk of the Committee. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Françoise Coulombe, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From Statistics Canada: Réjean Lachapelle, Director of Demography; Mr. Bruce B. Petrie, Assistant Chief Statistician.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(4)(b), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of official languages policies and programs.

Réjean Lachapelle made a statement and with Bruce Petrie answered questions.

At 5:03 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
