An Act to establish National Food Waste Awareness Day |
Preamble
Whereas food waste is on the rise in Canada, contributing to food insecurity for hundreds of thousands of Canadians;
Whereas food suitable for consumption is lost or wasted at every stage of the food system, from loss during harvest due to consumer demand for perfect-looking produce to waste by consumers when food is discarded as a result of inefficiencies in shopping and cooking practices and a poor understanding of date labels;
And whereas Parliament considers that it is important to increase awareness of food waste among Canadians to help make Canada’s food system more secure;
Now, therefore, His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the National Food Waste Awareness Day Act.

2 Throughout Canada, in each year, the 20th day of October is to be known as “National Food Waste Awareness Day”.
