SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Official Languages Act to provide that the requirement to understand both official languages also applies to judges of the Supreme Court of Canada. It also provides for a commitment to that effect from the Government of Canada.

An Act to amend the Official Languages Act (understanding of official languages) |
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Official Languages Act
1 (1) The portion of subsection 16(1) of the Official Languages Act before paragraph (a) is replaced by the following:
Duty to ensure understanding without an interpreter
16 (1) Every federal court has the duty to ensure that
(2) Subsection 16(3) of the Act is repealed.
2 The Act is amended by adding the following after section 45:
PART VII.1 Understanding of Official Languages

Start of inserted block45.1 (1) The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that judges who sit on federal courts understand both official languages in accordance with section 16.

Start of inserted block(2) Every federal court has the duty to ensure that positive measures are taken to facilitate the implementation of the commitment under subsection (1), including the offer of language training in both official languages to all judges.
