SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Ministries and Ministers of State Act to limit the number of ministers of State that may be assigned to preside over ministries of State or to assist a minister. It also amends the Salaries Act to limit to 26 the total number of ministers and ministers of State who may be paid a salary under that Act.

An Act to amend the Ministries and Ministers of State Act and the Salaries Act (limitation on the number of ministers and ministers of State)
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

MINISTRIES AND MINISTERS OF STATE ACT
1. The Ministries and Ministers of State Act is amended by adding the following after section 12:

Maximum — ministers of State
13. The total number of ministers of State that may be assigned either to preside over a ministry of State under section 7 or to assist a minister under section 11 shall not exceed the number obtained by subtracting the number of ministers referred to in subsection 4.1(3) of the Salaries Act who are paid a salary under that Act from 26.

SALARIES ACT
2. Section 4.1 of the Salaries Act is amended by adding the following after subsection (6):
Maximum — salaries
(7) The total number of ministers and ministers of State who may be paid a salary under this section shall not exceed 26.
