An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act (insurable employment)

      Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

1. (1) Subsection 5(2) of the Employment Insurance Act is amended by adding the following after paragraph (a):

    (a.1) employment designated as student employment by the Commission;

(2) The Act is amended by adding the following after section 5:

5.1 (1) For the purposes of paragraph 5(2)(a.1), an individual may make an application in the prescribed manner and form to the Commission to have the employment of the individual designated as a student employment;

(2) On receipt of the application, the Commission shall designate as student employment any employment, full-time or part-time, that is performed in Canada by the individual

    (a) where the individual is engaged in full-time studies in a secondary school, college or university in Canada; or

    (b) during the months of May, June, July and August in a year, where the individual is enrolled or intends to be enrolled as a full-time student in a secondary school, college or university in Canada for the semester beginning in August or September of the year.

2. Section 54 of the Act is amended by adding the following after paragraph (m):

    (m.1) prescribing the contents of an application under subsection 5.1;
