Wednesday, April 1, 1998
The Special Joint Committee on Child Custody and Access met at 9:00 o’clock a.m., this day, in the Ontario Room, Royal York Hotel, Toronto, the Joint Chairs, the Honourable Landon Pearson and Roger Gallaway presiding.
Members of the Committee present:
From the Senate: The Honourable Senators Erminie Cohen, Anne Cools, Mabel DeWare, Duncan Jessiman and Landon Pearson.
From the House of Commons: Carolyn Bennett, Paul Forseth, Roger Gallaway and Peter Mancini.
In attendance: Ron Stewart, Research Advisor.
Witnesses : From the Community Coalition for Custody and Access: Rita Benson, Member; Keith Marlowe, Member and Sylvia Pivko, Executive Director, Family Court Clinic. From the Central Toronto Youth Services Research and Program: Dr. Fred Matthews, Psychologist and Director. From the London Custody and Access Project: Dr. Marlies Suderman. From the Family Conflict Resolution Services: Vernon Beck, Program Director. From Canadians for Organizational and Personal Accountability: Rev. Dorian Baxter. From the Non-Custodial Parents of Durham: Ted Greenfield and Ted Eye. From the Children’s Voice: G. (Bill) Flores. As Individuals: Amy Beck; Jane King and Tracy London.
Pursuant to its Orders of Reference from the Senate dated October 28, 1997 and from the House of Commons dated November 18, 1997 the Committee resumed its study relating to child custody and access.
The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.
At 12:00 o’clock p.m. the sitting was suspended.
At 1:04 o’clock p.m. the sitting resumed.
Witnesses: From the London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse: Jan Richardson, Executive Director, Women’s Community House; Bina Ostoff, Counsellor Advocate, London Battered Women Advisory Centre; Margaret Buist, Lawyer, Family Law. From Real Women: Gwendolyn Landolt, National Vice-President and Lorraine McNamara, National Secretary. As Individuals: Usha Ahlawat; Alexandra Raphael; Barry Demeter and Anne Ross Demeter.
The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.
