An Act to establish National Food Waste Awareness Day

Preamble

Whereas food waste is on the rise in Canada, contributing to food insecurity for hundreds of thousands of Canadians;

Whereas food suitable for consumption is lost or wasted at every stage of the food system, from loss during harvest due to consumer demand for perfect-looking produce to waste by consumers when food is discarded as a result of inefficiencies in shopping and cooking practices and a poor understanding of date labels;

And whereas Parliament considers that it is important to increase awareness of food waste among Canadians to help make Canada’s food system more secure;

Now, therefore, His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

1This Act may be cited as the National Food Waste Awareness Day Act.

2Throughout Canada, in each year, the 20th day of October is to be known as “National Food Waste Awareness Day”.
