Monday, November 2, 1998
The Special Joint Committee on Child Custody and Access met in a televised session at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Joint Chairs, the Honourable Landon Pearson and Roger Gallaway, presiding.
Members of the Committee present:
From the Senate: The Honourable Senators Ermine Cohen, Joan Cook, Anne Cools, Mabel Deware, Marian Maloney and Landon Pearson.
From the House of Commons: Eleni Bakopanos, Carolyn Bennett, Sheila Finestone, Roger Gallaway, Nancy Karetak Lindell, Eric Lowther, Peter Mancini, Philip Mayfield and Caroline St. Hilaire.
Acting Member present: Deborah Grey for Paul Forseth.
Other Member of the House of Commons present: Shaughnessy Cohen.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas Research Coordinator and Margaret Young. Ron Stewart, Research Advisor.
Appearing: The Honourable Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Secretary of State (Children and Youth); the Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women); Patricia Walsh, Program Consultant, Family Support, Health Canada; Florence Ievers, Coordinator, Status of Women Canada; Lorraine Pelot, Health Canada.
Pursuant to its Orders of Reference from the Senate dated October 28, 1997 and from the House of Commons dated November 18, 1997 the Committee resumed its study relating to child custody and access.
The Honourable Hedy Fry and the Honourable Ethel Blondin-Andrew made opening statements and answered questions.
At 5:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
