SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Citizenship Act to include, in the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship, a solemn promise to respect the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Citizenship Act

1The schedule to the Citizenship Act is replaced by the schedule set out in the schedule to this Act.

Coming into Force

Day after royal assent

2This Act comes into force on the day after the day on which it receives royal assent.

Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship
I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.
