An Act respecting Hispanic Heritage Month

Loi instituant le Mois du patrimoine hispanique

Preamble

Whereas, according to the 2011 National Household Survey, 544,375 individuals in Canada reported Latin, Central and South American and another 368,305 individuals reported Spanish as their ethnic origin, and 873,395 individuals identified Spanish as the non-official language spoken at home;

Whereas the Parliament of Canada recognizes that the Hispanic-Canadian community has made valuable contributions to the social, economic, political and multicultural fabric of Canada, and the designation of a Hispanic Heritage Month would be a meaningful way to remember, celebrate and educate the public about these contributions;

Whereas a Hispanic Heritage Month would also provide national opportunities for the Hispanic-Canadian community to share and promote their unique culture and traditions with all Canadians;

And whereas October is a significant month for the Hispanic community around the world;

Préambule

que, selon l’Enquête nationale auprès des ménages de 2011, 544 375 personnes vivant au Canada ont dit, s’agissant de leur ethnie, être originaires d’Amérique latine, d’Amérique centrale ou d’Amérique du Sud, 368 305 autres personnes se sont dites d’origine ethnique espagnole et 873 395 personnes ont déclaré parler une langue non officielle, soit l’espagnol, à la maison;

que le Parlement du Canada reconnaît que la communauté hispano-canadienne a apporté une précieuse contribution au tissu social, économique, politique et multiculturel du Canada, et la désignation du Mois du patrimoine hispanique permettrait à la population d’en apprendre davantage sur cette contribution, de la célébrer et d’en perpétuer le souvenir;

que le Mois du patrimoine hispanique serait l’occasion tout indiquée pour les membres de la communauté hispano-canadienne de partager avec la population canadienne leur culture et leurs traditions et d’en faire la promotion;

que le mois d’octobre revêt une importance particulière pour la communauté hispanique du monde entier,

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Short title

1. This Act may be cited as the Hispanic Heritage Month Act.
