SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Broadcasting Act to prohibit the blackout of sports events being held in venues that have received a subsidy or tax relief from the federal government or from a provincial or municipal government.

An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act (sports blackouts)

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. Subsection 9(1) of the Broadcasting Act is amended by striking out “and” at the end of paragraph (g), by adding “and” at the end of paragraph (h) and by adding the following after paragraph (h):
(i) forbid any licensee to black out a sports event being held in a venue that has received a subsidy or tax relief from the federal government or from a provincial or municipal government.
2. Subsection 10(1) of the Act is amended by adding the following after paragraph (f):
(f.1) for the purposes of paragraph 9(1)(i), defining the phrase “black out” and setting out the circumstances in which the prohibition applies;
