An Act to designate the month of April as Punjabi Heritage Month
Whereas Punjabis from East and West Punjab, who began their migration to Canada over a century ago, have established deep roots here as thriving citizens and as active participants in communities across the country and thus enriched Canada’s social, cultural, economic and political fabric;
Whereas Punjabis in Canada fulfill their role as responsible citizens and partners in building up Canada and strengthening its sociable and generous spirit;
Whereas Punjabis have made significant contributions in various spheres such as art, language, literature, culture, media, dance, theatre, music, cuisine and sports, both in Canada and abroad;
Whereas Punjabis have initiated, developed and continue to refine vibrant and dynamic forms of cultural expression that are unique to the Punjabi-Canadian experience;
And whereas Vaisakhi (Baisakhi) is a major festival for Punjabis world over and is celebrated in the month of April to mark the establishment of the Khalsa and to share the joy of the Punjabi harvest season;
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
SHORT TITLE
Short title
1. This Act may be cited as the Punjabi Heritage Month Act.
PUNJABI HERITAGE MONTH
Punjabi Heritage Month
2. Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the month of April is to be known as “Punjabi Heritage Month”.
