SUMMARY
The purpose of this enactment is to give greater protection to firefighters under the Criminal Code.

An Act to amend the Criminal Code (firefighters)
R.S., c. C-46
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. Section 2 of the Criminal Code is amended by adding the following in alphabetical order:
“firefighter”
« pompier »
“firefighter” means any person employed in, or appointed or assigned to, a fire department;
2. Subsection 231(4) of the Act is amended by striking out “or” at the end of paragraph (b), by adding “or” at the end of paragraph (c) and by adding the following after paragraph (c):
(d) a firefighter acting in the course of his or her duties.
3. Subsection 268(2) of the Act is replaced by the following:
Aggravated assault
(1.1) Every one commits an aggravated assault who wounds, maims, disfigures or endangers the life of a firefighter acting in the course of his or her duties.
Punishment
(2) Every one who commits an aggravated assault under subsection (1) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years.

(2.1) Every one who commits an aggravated assault under subsection (1.1) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years.
4. Paragraph 270(1)(a) of the Act is replaced by the following:
(a) assaults a public officer, peace officer or firefighter engaged in the execution of his or her duty or a person acting in aid of such an officer or firefighter;
