SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Employment Insurance Act to change the way in which the qualifying period and the beginning of the benefit period are calculated in the case of a stoppage of work attributable to a labour dispute.

An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act (labour dispute)
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1996, c. 23
Employment Insurance Act
1. Section 8 of the Employment Insurance Act is amended by adding the following after subsection (1):
Labour dispute
(1.1) In determining the qualifying period for the purposes of subsection (1), any days during which there was a stoppage of work attributable to a labour dispute shall not be included.
2. Section 10 of the Act is amended by adding the following after section (1):
Labour dispute
(1.1) For the purposes of subsection (1), in the case of a stoppage of work attributable to a labour dispute, the interruption of earnings is deemed to have occurred on the day of the complete severance of their relationship with their former employer if, between the stoppage of work and the day of the severance, no earnings were paid by the employer.

3. This Act shall be deemed to have come into force on January 1, 2008.
