An Act to ensure annual reports to Parliament on Canadian peace initiatives
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
Short title
1. This Act may be cited as the Canada Peace Initiatives Act.
Purpose
2. (1) The purpose of this Act is to identify the following as key priorities of Canada’s foreign policy:
(a) the promotion of international peace and security;
(b) public diplomacy; and
(c) peace building and peacekeeping through the United Nations and other multilateral organizations.
Promotion of international peace and security
(2) For the purposes of this Act, “promotion of international peace and security” includes addressing the causes of human insecurity, such as poverty, lack of education, disease, environmental degradation and conflict.
Annual report
3. (1) The Minister of Foreign Affairs shall cause to be submitted to each House of Parliament, within six months after the end of each fiscal year or, if that House is not then sitting, on any of the first five days next thereafter on which that House is sitting, a report setting out Canada’s accomplishments in the promotion of international peace and security, in public diplomacy and in peace building and peacekeeping through the United Nations and other multilateral organizations.
