An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (closed captioning)
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. The Canada Elections Act is amended by adding the following after section 325:
Closed captioning
325.1 No person shall transmit an election advertising message to the public by means of a television broadcast or a broadcast on what is commonly known as the Internet unless it contains closed captioning for the hearing impaired.
2. Section 495 of the Act is amended by adding the following after subsection (2):
Offences requiring intent — summary conviction
(2.1) Every person who wilfully contravenes section 325.1 (closed captioning) is guilty of an offence.
