SUMMARY
This enactment prevents a claimant’s entitlement to benefit for pregnancy or caring for a new born or adoptee being reduced on account of the claimant receiving or having received a benefit for illness or injury.
It also prevents a claimant losing illness or injury benefit because the illness or injury has arisen during a pregnancy or caring period.

An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act (pregnancy benefit)
1996, c. 23
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. Subsections 12(5) and (6) of the Employment Insurance Act are replaced by the following:
Combined weeks of benefits
(5) In a claimant’s benefit period, the claimant may combine weeks of benefits to which the claimant is entitled because of a reason mentioned in subsection (3), but the maximum number of combined weeks is 65.
Combined weeks of benefits
(6) In a claimant’s benefit period, the claimant may, subject to the applicable maximums, combine weeks of benefits to which the claimant is entitled because of a reason mentioned in subsections (2) and (3), but the total number of weeks of benefits shall not exceed 65.
