An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act (benefit period increase)
1996, c. 23
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. Subsection 10(2) of the Employment Insurance Act is replaced by the following:
Length of benefit period
(2) The length of a benefit period is 52 weeks, except as otherwise provided in subsections (2.1), (10) to (15) and section 24.
Permanent layoffs
(2.1) The period of 52 weeks established by subsection (2) shall be increased, on one occasion only, by 2 weeks for every year that a claimant has been in the labour force, up to a maximum of 13 years, where the claimant
(a) becomes unemployed as a result of a permanent layoff by an employer;
(b) has been in the labour force for 10 years or more; and
(c) is 45 years of age or more.
