SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Canada Evidence Act to direct courts on how to interpret a numeric date that is in dispute.

An Act to amend the Canada Evidence Act (interpretation of numerical dates)
R.S., c. C-5
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. The Canada Evidence Act is amended by adding the following after section 30:
Construing numeric dates in documents
30.1 (1) Where a date in a document that is expressed as three groups of numerals is in dispute in any legal proceeding, the date shall be construed as if the year were first, the month were second and the day were third unless a contrary intention is expressed in the document.
Definition of “legal proceeding”
(2) In this section, “legal proceeding” means any civil or criminal proceeding or inquiry in which evidence is or may be given, and includes an arbitration.
