An Act respecting a national day of
remembrance of the Battle of Vimy
Ridge
|
|
Preamble
|
Whereas the Battle of Vimy Ridge of April
9, 1917 was the first time that Canadians from
coast to coast fought in a battle together
against a common enemy;
|
|
|
And Whereas the Battle of Vimy Ridge is
considered by many to be a turning point for
our country and the beginning of Canada's
march towards nationhood;
|
|
|
Now, Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the
advice and consent of the Senate and House of
Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
|

|
|

|
SHORT TITLE |
|
Short title
|
1. This Act may be cited as the Vimy Ridge
Day Act.
|
|
|
VIMY RIDGE DAY |
|
Vimy Ridge
Day
|
2. Throughout Canada, in each and every
year, the ninth day of April shall be known as
``Vimy Ridge Day''.
|
|
Canadian flag
at half-mast
|
3. In each and every year, on the ninth day
of April, the Canadian flag on the Peace Tower
shall be lowered at half-mast.
|
|
Not a legal
holiday
|
4. For greater certainty, Vimy Ridge Day
will not be considered a legal holiday or a
non-juridical day.
