Bill S-27

This enactment guarantees the right of the individual to privacy in Canada. It defines what is an infringement, and provides a test for justifiable infringement. It entitles individuals to claim and enforce their right to privacy, and to refuse to unjustifiably infringe the privacy rights of others. It prohibits unjustifiably infringing the right to privacy of another individual.

The enactment also requires the Minister of Justice to review bills and regulations for compliance, and entitles the Privacy Commissioner to be consulted in this regard. It authorizes the Governor in Council to make regulations codifying practices that are justifiable infringements under the Act.
