R.S., c. T-14	TRADE UNIONS ACT
R.S., c. 27 (1st Supp.), s. 203	*297. Section 28 of the Trade Unions Act* is repealed.**
1991, c. 45	TRUST AND LOAN COMPANIES ACT
	*298. Section 2 of the Trust and Loan Companies Act* is amended by adding the following in alphabetical order:**
``common-la w partner'' « conjoint de fait »	``common-law partner'', in relation to an individual, means a person who is cohabiting with the individual in a conjugal relationship, having so cohabited for a period of at least one year;
	299. Paragraphs (d) and (e) of the definition ``associate of the offeror'' in subsection 288(1) of the Act are replaced by the following:
	(d) a spouse or common-law partner of the offeror,
	(e) a child of the offeror or of the offeror's spouse or common-law partner, or
	(f) a relative of the offeror or of the offeror's spouse or common-law partner, if that relative has the same residence as the offeror;
1997, c. 15, s. 401(3)	300. (1) Subsection 484(5) of the Act is replaced by the following:
Preferred terms - loan to spouse or common-law partner	(5) Notwithstanding section 489, a company may make a loan referred to in paragraph 479(b) to the spouse or common-law partner of a senior officer of the company on terms and conditions more favourable than those offered to the public by the company if those terms and conditions have been approved by the conduct review committee of the company.
1997, c. 15, s. 401(3)	(2) The portion of subsection 484(6) of the Act before paragraph (a) is replaced by the following:
Preferred terms - other financial services	(6) Notwithstanding section 489, a company may offer financial services, other than loans or guarantees, to a senior officer of the company, or to the spouse or common-law partner, or a child who is less than eighteen years of age, of a senior officer of the company, on terms and conditions more favourable than those offered to the public by the company if
1997, c. 15, s. 401(3)	(3) Paragraph 484(6)(b) of the Act is replaced by the following:
	(b) the conduct review committee of the company has approved the practice of making those financial services available on those favourable terms and conditions to senior officers of the company or to the spouses or common-law partners, or the children under eighteen years of age, of senior officers of the company.
	301. Subsection 534(3) of the Act is replaced by the following:
Additional fine	(3) Where a person has been convicted of an offence under this Act, the court may, where it is satisfied that as a result of the commission of the offence the convicted person acquired any monetary benefits or that monetary benefits accrued to the convicted person or to the spouse, common-law partner or other dependant of the convicted person, order the convicted person to pay, notwithstanding the maximum amount of any fine that may otherwise be imposed under this Act, an additional fine in an amount equal to the court's estimation of the amount of those monetary benefits.
Replacement of ``spouse'' with ``spouse or common-law partner''	302. The Act is amended by replacing ``spouse'' with ``spouse or common-law partner'' in the following provisions:
	(a) paragraph 474(1)(c);
	(b) paragraph 474(1)(f);
	(c) subparagraph 484(1)(a)(ii); and
	(d) subparagraph 484(1)(b)(ii).
R.S.C. 1970, c. V-3	VETERANS INSURANCE ACT
	*303. (1) Paragraph (c) of the definition ``child'' in subsection 2(1) of the Veterans Insurance Act* is replaced by the following:**
	(c) a child acknowledged or maintained by the insured or for whom the insured has been judicially ordered to provide support;
	(2) Subsection 2(1) of the Act is amended by adding the following in alphabetical order:
``common-la w partner'' « conjoint de fait »	``common-law partner'', in relation to an individual, means a person who is cohabiting with the individual in a conjugal relationship, having so cohabited for a period of at least one year;
1974-75-76, c. 92, s. 4(1)	304. (1) Subsections 6(1) and (2) of the Act are replaced by the following:
Who are the beneficiaries	6. (1) Where the insured has a spouse, common-law partner or children, the beneficiary is, subject to subsections (4) and (5), the spouse, common-law partner or children of the insured, or some one or more of such persons.
Who are the beneficiaries	(2) Where the insured has no spouse, common-law partner or children, the beneficiary is, subject to subsections (4) and (5) and section 7, the future spouse, future common-law partner or future children of the insured, or some one or more of such persons.
	(2) Subsection 6(5) of the Act is replaced by the following:
If no designated beneficiary	(5) Where the insured does not designate a beneficiary, or where all of the beneficiaries designated by the insured die within the insured's lifetime, the insurance money shall be paid to the spouse, the common-law partner and the children of the insured in equal shares, and if the insured survives the spouse, the common-law partner and all the children of the insured, and there is no contingent beneficiary within the meaning of section 7 surviving the insured, the insurance money shall be paid, as it falls due or otherwise as the Minister may determine, to the estate or succession of the insured.
1974-75-76, c. 92, s. 4(2); 1990, c. 43, s. 57	(3) Subsections 6(6) and (7) of the Act are repealed.
Replacement of ``spouse'' with ``spouse or common-law partner''	305. The Act is amended by replacing ``spouse'' with ``spouse or common-law partner'' in the definition ``parent'' in subsection 2(1).
Replacement of ``the spouse'' with ``the spouse, the common-law partner''	306. The English version of the Act is amended by replacing ``the spouse'' with ``the spouse, the common-law partner'' in subsection 7(2).
Replacement of ``au conjoint'' with ``à l'époux, au conjoint de fait''	307. The French version of the Act is amended by replacing ``au conjoint'' with ``à l'époux, au conjoint de fait'' in subsection 7(2).
Replacement of ``husband, wife'' with ``spouse, common-law partner''	308. The Act is amended by replacing ``husband, wife'' with ``spouse, common-law partner'' in paragraph 16(j).
Replacement of terminology	309. The Act is amended by replacing ``is unmarried or is a widow or a widower or divorced, and without children'' with ``has no spouse, common-law partner or children'' in subsection 7(1).
Replacement of ``estate'' with ``estate or succession''	310. The English version of the Act is amended by replacing ``estate'' with ``estate or succession'' in the following provisions:
	(a) subsection 7(2); and
	(b) section 14.
R.S.C. 1970, c. V-4	VETERANS' LAND ACT
	*311. Subsection 2(1) of the Veterans' Land Act* is amended by adding the following in alphabetical order:**
``common-la w partner'' « conjoint de fait »	``common-law partner'', in relation to an individual, means a person who is cohabiting with the individual in a conjugal relationship, having so cohabited for a period of at least one year;
1980-81-82-8 3, c. 78, s. 5	312. Section 19 of the Act is replaced by the following:
Veterans' group insurance	19. (1) Where a veteran or a survivor of a veteran is indebted to the Director in connection with the sale of land or other property to the veteran or deceased spouse or common-law partner of the survivor, in connection with any mortgage or hypothec taken under section 17 or 17.1, or in connection with any loan made under Part III, the Director may, with the approval in writing of the veteran or survivor, enter into a group insurance contract on behalf of the veteran or survivor on such terms as the Director deems appropriate, insuring the life of the veteran or the spouse, common-law partner or survivor of the veteran in an amount sufficient to provide for the repayment to the Director of not less than fifty per cent of the amount of such indebtedness.
Director may pay insurance premiums, etc.	(2) The premiums payable under any group insurance contract entered into under subsection (1) shall be assessed by the Director against those veterans and survivors on whose behalf the contract was entered into and if any such veteran or survivor fails or neglects to pay any premium so assessed in respect of him or her, the Director may pay the premium on behalf of the veteran or survivor and any amount so expended by the Director shall be repaid by the veteran or survivor on demand with interest from the time the amount was so expended at the rate or rates in effect for the purpose of this subsection at that time, and, until so repaid, shall be added to the sale price of or amount outstanding on the land or other property referred to in subsection (1), or to the amount of the mortgage or hypothec referred to in that subsection, as the case may be, and shall become part of the principal.
Definition of ``survivor''	(3) In this section, ``survivor'', in relation to a veteran, means the surviving spouse or surviving common-law partner of that veteran.
1980-81-82-8 3, c. 78, s. 9	313. Subsections 37(2) and (3) of the Act are replaced by the following:
Rights of spouse, common-law partner and family members enforceable	(2) Notwithstanding any other provision of this Act, an order made or a judgment rendered by a court of competent jurisdiction in the province in which the land in question is situated to recognize or enforce the rights, interest or estate of the spouse, the common-law partner or a family member of a veteran in land that is the subject of a contract of sale, mortgage or hypothec under this Act applies to and is binding on the land subject to the rights, interest or estate of the Director in the land.
Replacement of ``spouse'' with ``spouse or common-law partner''	314. The Act is amended by replacing ``spouse'' with ``spouse or common-law partner'' in subsection 11(9).
1995, c. 18	VETERANS REVIEW AND APPEAL BOARD ACT
1999, c. 10, s. 39	*315. Section 33 of the Veterans Review and Appeal Board Act* is replaced by the following:**
Appeal to Tax Court of Canada	33. (1) Notwithstanding section 31, an appeal lies to the Tax Court of Canada from any decision of an appeal panel as to income or as to the source of income, for the purposes of the War Veterans Allowance Act or Part XI of the Civilian War-related Benefits Act, of
	(a) a person or their spouse, or both; or
	(b) a person or their common-law partner, or both.
Meaning of ``common-la w partner''	(2) In paragraph (1)(b), ``common-law partner'' has the same meaning as in subsection 2(1) of the War Veterans Allowance Act.
R.S., c. V-2	VISITING FORCES ACT
	*316. The definition ``dependant'' in section 2 of the Visiting Forces Act* is replaced by the following:**
``dependant'' « personne à charge »	``dependant'' means, with reference to a member of a visiting force or to a member of the armed forces of a designated state, a person who forms part of the member's household and depends on the member for support;
R.S., c. W-3	WAR VETERANS ALLOWANCE ACT
	Amendments
R.S., c. 7 (1st Supp.), s. 1(2)	*317. (1) The definition ````widow'', ``widower'' or ``surviving spouse'''' in subsection 2(1) of the War Veterans Allowance Act* is repealed.**
	(2) The definition ``père ou mère'' in subsection 2(1) of the French version of the Act is repealed.
	(3) The definition ``child'' in subsection 2(1) of the Act is replaced by the following:
``child'' « enfant »	``child'' means a child of
	(a) a veteran,
	(b) a veteran's survivor who, having been a recipient, marries and
	(i) whose spouse of that marriage dies, or
	(ii) whose marriage ends in dissolution or legal separation, or
	(c) a veteran's survivor who, having been a recipient, acquires a common-law partner and
	(i) whose common-law partner dies, or
	(ii) who ceases to cohabit with that common-law partner,
	and includes an adopted child or a foster child of a veteran, and a child, adopted child or foster child of a veteran's spouse or common-law partner;
	(4) The definition ``parent'' in subsection 2(1) of the English version of the Act is replaced by the following:
``parent'' « parent »	``parent'' includes
	(a) an adoptive or foster-parent, and
	(b) a parent's spouse or common-law partner;
	(5) Paragraph (e) of the definition ``dependent child'' in subsection 2(1) of the Act is replaced by the following:
	(e) a child referred to in paragraph (a), (b), (c) or (d) who has a spouse or common-law partner and who is financially dependent on a recipient;
R.S., c. 20 (3rd Supp.), s. 30(2)	(6) Paragraphs (a) and (b) of the definition ``orphelin'' in subsection 2(1) of the French version of the Act are replaced by the following:
	a) Enfant dont les parents sont décédés;
	b) enfant dont l'un des parents est décédé et dont l'autre a, de l'avis du ministre, abandonné ou délaissé l'enfant;
1990, c. 43, s. 32(3)	(7) Paragraph (c) of the definition ``orphan'' in subsection 2(1) of the Act is replaced by the following:
	(c) a child of
	(i) divorced or separated parents, or
	(ii) parents who are neither spouses nor common-law partners of each other
	who is bereft by death of a parent who was, at the time of death, receiving an additional allowance in respect of that child, and
