SUMMARY |
This enactment provides a definition of ``child'' as a person under
eighteen years of age that applies to all Acts and regulations except in
cases where a different age is set for particular reasons. This does not
apply where the word implies only a relationship regardless of age or
where the issue of the person's majority is subject to provincial law.
This definition is consistent with the principles of the United Nations
Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Canada is a signatory.
The enactment will ensure that ``child'' has a consistent meaning in
Canadian enactments.
