SUMMARY

The purpose of this enactment is to approve, give effect to and declare valid land claims agreements between Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, the Government of the Yukon Territory and certain Yukon first nations, and to enable the Governor in Council to approve, give effect to and declare valid other land claims agreements entered into after this enactment comes into force.

Once in effect, the agreements are land claims agreements within the meaning of section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. The enactment of legislation is required in order for the agreements to have effect.

This enactment is based on the same principles as other Acts approving land claims agreements, such as the Western Arctic (Inuvialuit) Claims Settlement Act, S.C. 1984, c. 24, the Gwich'in Land Claim Settlement Act, S.C. 1992, c. 53, and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act, S.C. 1993, c. 29.
