SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Referendum Act to allow a referendum to be held on a question relating to the reform of Canada’s electoral system and to allow for a referendum to be held at the same time as a general election.

An Act to amend the Referendum Act |
His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Referendum Act
1 The long title of the Referendum Act is replaced by the following:
An Act to provide for referendums on the Constitution of Canada Insertion start and electoral reform Insertion end
2 Subsection 3(1) of the Act is replaced by the following:
Proclamation of referendum
3 (1) Insertion start If Insertion end the Governor in Council considers that it is in the public interest to obtain by means of a referendum the opinion of electors on any question relating to the Constitution of Canada Insertion start or to the reform of the electoral system of Canada Insertion end , the Governor in Council may, by proclamation, direct that the opinion of electors be obtained by putting the question to the electors of Canada or of one or more provinces specified in the proclamation at a referendum called for that purpose.
3 Subsections 6(5) to (7) of the Act are replaced by the following:
Restriction
(5) Writs of referendum Insertion start shall Insertion end not be dated on a day later than the 36th day before polling day at the referendum.
