SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Members of Parliament Retiring Allowances Act and provides for the continuation of a section of that Act that was repealed in 1992.

The principal amendments are as follows:

    (a) the institution of an election to continue or come under the Act;

    (b) the extension of survivor benefits to common law spouses;

    (c) the decrease of contribution rates by two per cent;

    (d) the decrease of accrual rates by one per cent;

    (e) the institution of a minimum pensionable age;

    (f) the imposition of reductions or suspensions of benefits in cases of ``double-dipping''; and

    (g) the change of the review dates for the actuarial review of the pension plan.

In addition, this enactment makes a number of technical changes to the Act.
