Summary
This enactment provides for increased transparency and objectivity in the selection of suitable individuals to be named to high public positions in Canada.
It establishes a committee of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada to develop public criteria and procedures, provides a process to identify and assess candidates and provides for parliamentary review of appointments.
Appointments to the positions of Governor General, Chief Justice of Canada, Speaker of the Senate, Lieutenant Governor of a province, Commissioner of a territory and to the Supreme Court of Canada and the Senate must be reviewed. Appointments to the Federal Court of Canada and to the superior courts in the provinces may be reviewed.
