Participation of the Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, to the Conference of Speakers of European Union Parliaments (EUSC), Spain
From April 21 to 23, 2024, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P., participated in the Conference of Speakers of European Union Parliaments in Palma, Spain.
The conference, hosted by the Spanish Parliament (Cortes Generales), was attended by over 50 Speakers, or their representatives, of EU Member States Parliaments and the European Parliament, EU candidate countries and guest countries with special partnerships with the European Union..
The conference included working sessions on the topics of “The Strategic Autonomy of the European Union faced with the new challenges for liberal democracies in times of social media and artificial intelligence as regards foreign and defence policy” and “Strengthening the European Union from an economic and social perspective”.
Following two days of discussion, the conference culminated with the adoption of conclusions, recommendations, and the Charter on the Role of Parliamentarism in an Effective Democracy.
During the event, the Speaker conducted several bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other legislatures.
