Parliamentarians to assess climate change with a gender lens

(Ottawa) May 22, 2018 – A Canadian all-party parliamentary delegation representing the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas is attending the 10th Gathering of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from May 22nd to 24th, 2018.

The Honourable Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., Vice-President of ParlAmericas and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, is leading the Canadian delegation. Accompanying Mr. Nault are the Honourable Anne Cools, Senator, the Honourable Mobina Jaffer, Senator and Vice-President of the ParlAmericas Network for Gender Equality, the Honourable Kellie Leitch, P.C., M.P., Mr. Randy Boissonnault, M.P. and Vice-President of the Open Parliamentary Network, and Ms. Sheila Malcolmson, M.P.

Mr. Nault will deliver opening and closing remarks at the meeting of the Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality, which will focus on “Gender-Responsive Climate Action.”

”We know that climate change has real-world implications and needs to be addressed through both policy and action,” stated the Hon. Bob Nault. “A large part of this mandate is the inclusion of the opinions of women scientists, leaders, and policy makers. Their knowledge, advocacy and decision-making abilities are an integral part of the climate change discussion, which will be brought to the table at this gathering.”

The meeting’s focus will be assessing climate change with a gender lens to improve planning, policy-making and legislation. The Canadian delegation will participate in working sessions on such topics as the role of parliamentarians in ensuring appropriate investments in – and resource mobilization for – gender and climate change, best practices in designing gender-responsive climate adaptation measures, and the consequences of climate change for women’s health.”

Founded 17 years ago in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only inter-parliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada.

Since the beginning, the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas has worked closely with ParlAmericas International to further parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue across the hemisphere.
