Canadian parliamentarians to attend the ParlAmericas
Annual Plenary Assembly in Colombia
OTTAWA – An all-party delegation of Canadian parliamentarians will attend the ParlAmericas 14th Annual Plenary Assembly from November 15 to 17, 2017 in Medellin, Colombia.
This year’s Plenary Assembly will feature discussions on fostering responsible political discourse that model tolerance, respect, and plurality in an era of “post-truth” and “fake news” through mainstream and social media. Representatives of national legislatures from throughout the Americas and the Caribbean are expected to attend.
The Canadian delegation will be led by the Hon. Robert D. Nault, M.P., P.C., Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas. He will be accompanied by the Hon. Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Senator; Mr. Randy Boissonnault, M.P.; Mr. Richard Cannings, M.P. and Mr. Bev Shipley, M.P.
“During my own time in politics, the nature of journalism has changed drastically, particularly with the advent of social media. We now live in a minute-by-minute news cycle, which has dramatically altered our relationship with the media. Discussing these platforms and technologies with other member countries will shed light on how we can best adapt in a rapidly changing media landscape to ensure that the information presented to citizens is credible,” stated Nault.
The Plenary Assembly is ParlAmericas’ highest decision-making body and represents the annual general meeting of its members. It convenes to discuss important hemispheric issues and through elections fill vacancies on ParlAmericas 22-member Board of Directors.
Founded 16 years ago in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only inter-parliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada.
Since the beginning, the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas has worked closely with ParlAmericas International to further parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue across the hemisphere.
