NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 25, 2021

Senator Rosa Galvez Elected President of ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network on Climate Change

Hosted by the Senate of Mexico and the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, the 5th Gathering of ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network on Climate Change (PNCC) was held virtually over three days in June 2021. During the final meeting on June 25, the Honourable Rosa Galvez, Senator, Vice-Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, was elected President of the PNCC, having previously served as its Vice President–North America.

Senator Galvez commented: “I am greatly looking forward to continuing my work with ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network on Climate Change. We need to take a multilateral approach to address climate change and this Network gives us vital means by which parliamentarians in the Americas and the Caribbean can exchange ideas and experiences on critical climate change issues, like mitigation and adaptation. While these issues are important for everyone, their impacts often disproportionately affect marginalized communities and youth, and the implications for future generations must also be considered.”

Mr. Marc Serré, MP, Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, stated: “I want to congratulate Senator Galvez on her election as President of ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network on Climate Change. Like others, I know she will bring her considerable knowledge and insights to ParlAmericas’ work on climate issues, which are important for the western hemisphere. I join Senator Galvez in looking forward to future conversations as we listen to, and learn from, other legislators on issues that affect us all.”

The 5th Gathering of ParlAmericas’ PNCC allowed legislators from throughout the western hemisphere to discuss ways to address inequalities that are exacerbated by climate change and that should be considered when moving away from greenhouse gas–intensive activities to a low-carbon economy, which is sometimes referred to as a “just transition.” They joined youth and representatives of civil society and such other organizations as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in examining such topics as: strategies for including diverse groups of youth in climate change actions; and the role of parliamentarians in social dialogue on climate change and a just transition.

Canadian parliamentarians were active participants in the virtual gathering. On June 4, Senator Galvez moderated a panel discussion on promoting inclusive climate action. On June 15, Mr. Serré delivered closing remarks during the dialogue with civil society and youth representatives.

Founded in 2001 in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only interparliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada. The Canadian Section of ParlAmericas works closely with the Secretariat to advance parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.
