Canadian Section of ParlAmericas to attend UN Climate Change Conference in Madrid
From December 2 to December 3, 2019, the Honourable Rosa Galvez, Senator, Vice-Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas and Vice President (North America) of ParlAmericas’ Parliamentary Network on Climate Change, will represent the Canadian Section at the 25th Conference of the Parties (COP 25) which occurs within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The conference will be held in Madrid, Spain.
As an official observer organization to the UNFCCC, the International Secretariat of ParlAmericas is able to make both submissions on the issues under negotiation and statements during formal proceedings. Among other activities, Senator Galvez will participate in sessions focused on such topics as gender and climate change, adaptation and infrastructure, and the role of parliamentarians in supporting implementation of the Paris Agreement.
"In order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, countries around the world are being urged to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. More than 65 countries, including Canada, have already committed to this goal," said Senator Galvez. "My ability to represent the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas at COP 25 allows me to undertake discussions with a range of participants – including legislators, government officials, scientists, Indigenous peoples, youth and other members of civil society – and to bring a Canadian perspective to the search for ways to achieve shared goals for climate change mitigation and adaptation."
