OTTAWA – December 4, 2018 – The Honourable Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., President of ParlAmericas and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, tabled a report in the House of Commons on Tuesday, December 4th, 2018. The report’s focus is the participation of Canadian parliamentarians at the 10th Gathering of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality from May 22nd to 24th, 2018 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Mr. Nault led an all-party delegation to the meeting. The delegation was comprised of the Honourable Anne C. Cools, Senator, the Honourable Mobina S.B. Jaffer, Q.C., Senator and Vice-President of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality, the Honourable Kellie Leitch, P.C., M.P., Mr. Randy Boissonnault, M.P. and Vice-President of ParlAmericas Open Parliamentary Network, and Ms. Sheila Malcolmson, M.P.

During the meeting, delegates from 25 countries across the Americas and the Caribbean shared information on such topics as the role of parliamentarians in ensuring appropriate investments in – and resource mobilization for – gender equality and climate change adaptation, best practices in designing gender-responsive climate adaptation measures, and the consequences of climate change for women’s health. During a workshop, delegates also discussed best practices regarding, as well as social and economic benefits resulting from, gender-sensitive budgeting.

“This ParlAmericas meeting highlighted the different ways in which climate change impacts individuals and communities across the hemisphere,” stated Mr. Nault. “I believe that we can help reduce both climate threats and social inequalities in the Americas and the Caribbean by introducing more gender-responsive policies and legislation. Women’s representation in climate decision-making processes is crucial to achieving these goals.”

Founded in 2001 in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only interparliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada. The Canadian Section of ParlAmericas works closely with the Secretariat to advance parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.
