CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS MEET WITH U.S. CONGRESSIONAL COUNTERPARTS

From 26–28 November 2018, the Honourable John McKay, P.C., M.P. and Mr. Brian Masse, M.P., Vice-Chairs of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary Group, led a delegation to Washington, D.C. for meetings on Capitol Hill. The other members of the delegation were the Honourable Senators Jane Cordy, Jim Munson and Victor Oh, as well as Ms. Tracy Ramsey, M.P. and Mr. Anthony Rota, M.P.

While in Washington, members of the Canadian Section also attended an event organized by the Canadian American Business Council, received a briefing from the U.S. Congressional Research Service, and heard a panel discussion about the U.S. tariffs on aluminum imposed pursuant to section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, and their implications for aluminum production and related jobs in the United States.

“We were very pleased to be able to meet with U.S. Senators, members of the House of Representatives and their staff at this critical time in the Canada–U.S. relationship,” said Mr. McKay. “These meetings allowed for honest and meaningful discussions about the importance of the Canada ̶ U.S. relationship generally, and – specifically – the role that free and fair trade, as well as integrated supply chains, play in the economies of both countries.”

Mr. Masse concluded: “In addition to trade, Canada ̶ U.S. relations in the areas of defence, security, energy and the environment are crucially important. Our two nations depend on each other in a great many ways, including for mutual defence and security, and to protect joint water and other shared resources. Of course, ensuring that our countries support each other in these and other relevant areas is an important priority for us.”
