On Feb. 12, 2025, the Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Raymonde Gagné, C.M., O.M., participated in the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, and the Preparatory Committee for the Fifteenth Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in New York, New York. The preparatory meetings for the Sixth World Conference are attended by Speakers nominated from the geopolitical groups of the IPU and the IPU Executive Committee. The Inter-Parliamentary Union has held its high-level World Conference of Speakers of Parliament approximately every five years since the event was inaugurated in August 2000. The preparatory meetings provide the participants with an opportunity to engage with fellow Speakers and discuss matters relating to the time and venue of the 2025 Speakers’ Conference, its main objective, general format, themes, and expected outcomes.
On Feb. 13 and 14, 2024, the Speaker also participated in the 2025 Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations. The annual hearing provides an important opportunity for parliamentarians to engage in dialogue, share experiences and perspectives with one another, and to hear from UN officials. The theme of this year’s conference was “Scaling up action for the Sustainable Development Goals: Finance, Institutions, and Politics”.
During these events, the Speaker had the opportunity to conduct meetings with representatives from other legislatures.
