From July 5 to July 9, 2024, the Honourable Raymonde Gagné, Speaker of the Senate, and the Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, participated in the 49th Annual Session of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF) in Montreal, Canada.
The Annual Session, hosted by the Parliament of Canada, was attended by over 350 Parliamentarians. Speaker Gagné and Speaker Fergus served as co-hosts. During the event, both Speakers had the opportunity to exchange with other parliamentarians on political, economic, cultural, and social issues related to la Francophonie, including the status and preservation of the French language, and held several bilateral meetings with their counterparts.
The central theme of this year’s Annual Session focused on artificial intelligence at the service of legislators: the potentials and risks associated with its integration into parliaments. The member states also addressed issues related to economic development, human rights, and good governance and discussed democratic values, peace, and stability in various regions of the world.
