Visit of the Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons, and a Parliamentary Delegation, People's Democratic Republic of Algeria
From April 24 to 26, 2024, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Greg Fergus, P.C., M.P., led a parliamentary delegation to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. The delegation consisted of Mr. Peter Julian, M.P., and Ms. Viviane Lapointe, M.P. Accompanying the delegation were Mr. Anthony Carricato, Director of Operations and International Affairs, Office of the Speaker of the House of Commons, and Ms. Alison Tardif-Plante, Secretary to the delegation.
In Algiers, People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, the delegation met with the following officials and organizations:
- His Excellency Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria;
- His Excellency Mr. Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation;
- His Excellency Mr. Ibrahim Boughali, Speaker of the National People's Assembly;
- His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad;
- The Women's Advisory Council of the Canadian Embassy;
- The Conseil du renouveau économique algérien (CREA); and
- The Network of Canadians in Algeria and consular delegates in Algeria.
The visit to Algeria —the first high-level visit from a Speaker of the Canadian Parliament in a number of years— served to strengthen relations and explore opportunities for further cooperation between our countries and institutions. The delegation held discussions on Algeria's geopolitical situation, on areas in which Canada can increase investments, and on how to further promote economic ties between the two countries. The visit also provided an opportunity to share Canadian values and engage in dialogue with counterparts to better understand the common interests that unite us, while exploring ways to foster collaborative ties.
The report will be available once it has been tabled in the House of Commons.
