CANADIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS
ATTEND WINTER MEETING OF U.S. GOVERNORS
From 20–23 February 2015, Senator
Janis Johnson, Co-Chair of the Canadian Section of the Canada–United States Inter-Parliamentary
Group (IPG), led a delegation to the winter meeting of the National Governors
Association in Washington, D.C. The other delegates were Senator Daniel Lang
and Mr. John Carmichael, M.P.
“As is always the case, this meeting
of governors provided members of the IPG with an unparalleled opportunity to
speak with governors – particularly those who were recently sworn in – about
the scope and depth of the bilateral relationship that Canada shares with the
United States and with their state. Many governors were attending an NGA
meeting for the first time, and it was wonderful to begin what members of the
IPG’s Canadian Section hope will be a mutually beneficial relationship,” said
Senator Johnson.
Senator Johnson concluded: “As well,
we were pleased to attend a reception in honour of the U.S. governors at the
Canadian Embassy. Co-hosted by the Canadian and Mexican ambassadors to the
United States, Ambassador Gary Doer and Ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora, the
reception was attended by 27 of the governors at the NGA meeting, which – I
hope – indicates a high level of interest by them in North American
cooperation. We were fortunate to be able to both renew our friendships with
some governors and meet, for the first time, some of those who were elected in
November 2014.”
Founded in 1908 when President
Theodore Roosevelt gathered state governors in order to discuss the nation’s
resources, the National Governors Association is the collective voice of U.S.
governors from the 50 states, three territories and two commonwealths. It is
also a public policy organization that represents the governors on Capitol Hill
and before the U.S. Administration on federal issues that affect them, and that
develops and implements solutions to public policy challenges. More information
about the NGA can be found at: www.nga.org.
