Hon. Bob Nault tables in Parliament a report on Gender Equality on behalf of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas
“Eliminating gender inequality is a priority in Canada and throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.” – Nault
OTTAWA – The Hon. Bob Nault, P.C., M.P., Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas tabled a report on Friday, May11, 2018, in the House of Commons regarding the participation of Canadian parliamentarians at an Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Gender Equality from 24 to 25 January in Kingston, Jamaica.
The Canadian delegation was led by Ms. Joyce Murray, M.P. She was accompanied by the Hon. Anne Cools, Senator; Mr. Murray Rankin, M.P.; and the Hon. David Wells, Senator.
The meeting, which brought together lawmakers from the Anglophone Caribbean and Canada, focused on improving gender relations and building constructive partnerships to eliminate gender inequality. Parliamentarians have a critical role to play in eliminating gender biases when legislating, representing their constituents, and scrutinizing government spending plans.
In addition to hearing about projects to end violence against women and girls, delegates discussed legislative reforms to advance workplace equality and the importance of involving men as partners to address gender inequality.
“Eliminating gender inequality is a priority in Canada and throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. As we join together in this effort, it is necessary to build these partnerships as legislatures and leaders, to ensure that we are advancing this agenda and improving gender policies throughout the hemisphere,” stated Nault.
Founded 17 years ago in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only inter-parliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada.
Since the beginning, the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas has worked closely with ParlAmericas International to further parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue across the hemisphere.
