Canadian parliamentarians to participate at ParlAmericas Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Gender Equality in Jamaica

OTTAWA - An all-party delegation of Canadian parliamentarians will paticipate at ParlAmericas Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Gender Equality from 24 to 25 January in Kingston, Jamaica.

The focus of the meeting is on building partnerships to transform gender relations. Parliamentarians will discuss how they can collaborate with various stakeholders with the goal of eliminating gender inequality.

Parliamentarians have a critical role to play in eliminating gender biases when legislating, representing their constituents, and scrutinizing the government’s spending plans. They can also contribute significantly to the development, execution, and oversight of coordinated responses among stakeholders.

The Canadian delegation will be led by Mr. Anthony Rota, M.P. He will be accompanied by the Hon. Anne Cools, Senator; Ms. Joyce Murray, M.P.; Mr. Murray Rankin, M.P.; and the Hon. David Wells, Senator.

“One of the key objectives throughout parliaments and civil society in the Caribbean and the Americas is to help bring about gender equality and parity,” stated the Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, the Honourable Bob Nault. “The Inter-parliamentary work that we do through ParlAmericas, such as the upcoming meeting in Jamaica, are an extremely important step to further this common goal throughout the hemisphere.”

The ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality promotes women’s political leadership and the inclusion of gender equality issues at the national legislatures of the Americas and the Caribbean.

Founded 16 years ago in Ottawa, ParlAmericas is the only inter-parliamentary institution with its International Secretariat headquartered in Canada.

Since the beginning, the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas has worked closely with ParlAmericas International to further parliamentary diplomacy and political dialogue across the hemisphere.
