An Act respecting the friendship between Canada and the Netherlands

Preamble

Whereas during World War II the Canadian Armed Forces, along with their allies, liberated the large portions of the Netherlands that were under German control, brought much-needed resources to alleviate the suffering of the Dutch people after years of deprivation and occupation, and formed a profound bond between the people of Canada and the people of the Netherlands that has remained vibrant and strong to this day;

Whereas each year the people of the Netherlands recognize Canada’s enormous contribution to their country by giving tulips to the Canadian people as a symbol of their lasting friendship and the gratitude of the Dutch people;

And whereas the Parliament of Canada wishes to honour the immense contribution of the Canadian men and women who assisted in the liberation of the Netherlands and to celebrate the friendship between Canada and the Netherlands;

que durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les Forces armées canadiennes, aidées de leurs alliés, ont libéré les vastes régions des Pays-Bas contrôlées par les Allemands, ont apporté aux Pays-Bas des ressources dont le peuple néerlandais avait grandement besoin pour alléger sa souffrance après des années de dépossession et d’occupation, et ont fait naître des liens profonds entre les Canadiens et les Néerlandais, liens qui sont encore très forts aujourd’hui;

que chaque année, le peuple néerlandais marque l’immense contribution que le Canada a apportée à son pays en donnant des tulipes aux Canadiens, symbole de sa longue amitié et de sa gratitude;

que le Parlement du Canada souhaite rendre hommage à l’immense contribution des Canadiens et des Canadiennes qui ont participé à la libération des Pays-Bas et célébrer l’amitié qui unit nos deux pays,

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

Short title

1. This Act may be cited as the Maple Leaf and Tulip Day Act.

2. Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the 5th day of May shall be known as “Maple Leaf and Tulip Day” in recognition and celebration of the friendship between Canada and the Netherlands.

2. Le 5 mai est, dans tout le Canada, désigné comme « Journée de la feuille d'érable et de la tulipe », jour destiné à la reconnaissance et à la célébration de l’amitié entre le Canada et les Pays-Bas.

3. For greater certainty, Maple Leaf and Tulip Day is not a legal holiday or a non-juridical day.
