SUMMARY
This enactment increases benefit periods under the Employment Insurance Act based on regional rates of unemployment.

An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act (benefit period increase for regional rate of unemployment)
1996, c. 23
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. Section 10 of the Employment Insurance Act is amended by adding the following after subsection (2):
Adjustment for unemployment rate
(2.1) The benefit period established by subsection (2) is increased by
(a) 2 weeks for every percentage point by which the regional rate of unemployment exceeds 4% but does not exceed 10%, and
(b) 3 weeks for every percentage point by which the regional rate of unemployment exceeds 10%,
subject to a maximum period of 52 weeks.
