SUMMARY
This enactment amends the Nuclear Energy Act in order to make Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, the federal organization responsible for research on nuclear energy and for its development and marketing accountable to the Minister of Industry rather than the Minister of Natural Resources. The enactment also transfers to the Minister of Industry those shares of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited that are owned or held by the Minister of Natural Resources.

An Act to amend the Nuclear Energy Act (change of responsible minister)
R.S., c. A-16; 1997, c. 9, s. 89
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1. The definition “Minister” in section 2 of the Nuclear Energy Act is replaced by the following:
“Minister”

“Minister” means the Minister of Industry;
2. The Act is amended by adding the following after section 11:
Transfer of shares
11.1 (1) Any shares of the company Atomic Energy of Canada Limited that are owned or held by the Minister of Natural Resources under subsection 11(1) as it read immediately before the coming into force of this section are hereby transferred to the Minister of Industry, who is hereby authorized to acquire the shares.
Registration and holding of shares
(2) The shares transferred to the Minister by subsection (1) shall be registered in the books of the company Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in the name of the Minister and shall be owned or held by the Minister in trust for Her Majesty in right of Canada.
