An Act to amend the Criminal Code (puppy mills)

R.S., c. C-46

      Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

1. The Criminal Code is amended by adding the following after section 182.3:

Aggravating circumstances for sentencing purposes

182.31 Without limiting the generality of section 718.2, where a court imposes a sentence on a person under subsection 182.2(2) or 182.3(3), the ownership of a puppy mill by that person or the participation by that person in the operation of a puppy mill shall be deemed to be aggravating circumstances relating to the offence that the court shall consider under paragraph 718.2(a).

2. This Act comes into force on the day on which section 8 of Bill C-15B, introduced in the 1st session of the 37th Parliament and entitled An Act to amend the Criminal Code (cruelty to animals and firearms) and the Firearms Act, comes into force.
