SUMMARY

This enactment amends the Canada Wildlife Act, which was passed in 1973 to permit the Government to conduct wildlife research and to undertake various activities related to wildlife conservation and interpretation.

The amendments extend that Act to cover wild plants and other organisms as well as marine areas. They make that Act binding on Her Majesty, both federally and provincially, and authorize the establishment of protected marine areas within which wildlife research, conservation and interpretation activities may be conducted.

The amendments authorize the recovery of costs related to the management of public lands and protected marine areas. They update and strengthen the enforcement provisions relating to wildlife officers, inspections, searches, seizures, abandonment, forfeiture and disposal of property.

Finally, provision is made for issuing tickets for alleged offences. Penalties for offences are increased and courts are given increased authority to make sentencing orders.
